Ekphrastic Writing at the VMFA (ages 12-15)
By definition, an “ekphrastic” piece of writing is a vivid description of a scene or, more commonly, a work of art, through the imaginative act of narrating and reflecting on the “action” of the image.
In this workshop, students will tour a select number of gallery rooms at the VMFA, notebooks in hand. As a group, we'll chat about certain pieces that stand out to us and why. In each room, students will get to sit in front of their chosen art piece and write a creative poem or short story inspired by the scene in front of them. Students will get to experience the grandness of the VMFA, but make it feel entirely within their grasp.
This class will meet outside of the main entrance of the VMFA.
